Acne

Acne {pimples} is a disorder caused by blockage of sebaceous gland {oil glands} usually it occurs during teenage in both girls and boys but it can also occur from birth to 65 years of age. Most of the time it is a physiological {normal, natural} phenomenon of body.

Other causative factors include

  • Systemic problem with hormonal imbalance {increase in androgen that is testosterone levels}
  • Increased insulin like growth factor {IGF1} in post adolescent acne PCOD/PCOS in girls
  • Anabolic steroids in boys who are taking supplements for body building
  • Metabolic syndrome

Aggravating factors

  • High glycemic index food
  • Obesity
  • Oily food {junk food} / Deep fried food
  • Stress
  • Lack of exercise
  • Sedentary life
  • Exposure to sun {ultraviolet } rays
  • Pollution, soot, undisciplined life style etc.
  • Usually there is a family history of acne as in father or mother

Usually acne occurs on the face but it can also occur on the trunk, scalp, buttocks and thighs.

There are various types of acne or pimples for example acne vulgaris, cystic acne, nodular acne, truncal acne, hormonal dependent acne, etc. in rare instances there are special type of  acne associated with metabolic syndrome like obesity, hair loss, diabetes,  cholesterol abnormalities. Another example of acne is in middle aged women.

There are different grades of acne from grade 1 to grade 4. Usually in grade 1 there is obstruction of sebaceous gland {oil gland } may be open comedones/ black heads or closed comedones / white eads, grade 2 has inflammation {swelling } sometimes red/pustular{ having pus} and pigmentation , grade 3 are cystic { 3 to 4 sebaceous glands join to form a group } and grade 4 is nodular with scarring.

The treatment of acne {pimples} depends upon the type and grade and aggravating factor, being a physiological phenomenon {natural process of the body} it needs treatment for long duration, sometimes 6 months to 2 years.
